AMD released the long-awaited Vega VII GPU, but fans are unimpressed, why? Let’s find out! Let’s talk about the good stuff first! AMD released this graphics card with open-air comparing to Vega 64 where they used blower style one. Open air cooler provides better room for overclocking and performance in general. Despite using 7nm architecture Vega VII rocks 300W TDP (Vega 64 has 295W), but why? AMD used the extra TDP that got from reducing architecture to boost clock speed.

But how that reflects on games? Radeon VII comparing to Vega 64 is ~28% faster in DX12 games, however, if you like to play older games u can see about 20% of improvement there. If you play during the night but work during the day you can see 32% improvements in synthetic workload. In that case, you will also benefit from having 16GB of HBM2 memory. However, it’s a double-edged sword. Since HBM2 is very expensive it puts the card at the $699 range. You will also need a beefier power supply but if you are even considering this card for your rig that should not be a problem. What should you consider is 75W greater TDP comparing to 2080 (225W) but performance is similar, you can see the comparison in graphs down below.

To conclude this article, Radeon VII is an interesting piece of hardware. While 16GB of HBM2 memory is impressive, it drags the price of the card to high. Considering 8GB of VRAM is enough and extra bandwidth doesn’t help too much in gaming (and lack of crossfire doesn’t help in workstation uses) it’s kind of a missed opportunity. With less VRAM they could have made a card with the price around the RTX 2070(~$500). Never the less it’s great to see AMD back competing with Nvidia and their prices.
